The Command Line for Absolute Beginners Part 1

The Command Line for Absolute Beginners Part 1

Understanding the command line can be a powerful skill for digital humanists, but it can be intimidating to get started.

Knowledge of the command line has two main benefits:

1. The command line allows access to the file system in ways the graphical user interface doesn’t support.

2. Not every program has a graphic interface: many DH tools are command-line based, or have functions that can only be run from the command line, which can be a barrier to those unused to the terminal interface.

This two-part workshop allows participants to build familiarity and confidence with the command line interface, learn the syntax of the command line, develop basic navigation and file manipulation skills, and get experience calling and using programs within the terminal.
